Edward Elwell's Catalog
This reprint of Edward Elwell's CATALOGUE OF TOOLS is thought to have been issued in the late1860s. This most important English manufacturer forged tools and implements of all varieties and in very large quanities. This catalogue shows, apart from the billhooks for which the company was well known, some 79 axe, 46 adze, 80 hoe and 135 shovel patterns. In addition to the domestic market there was a vast output for export: Russian miners' hammers, Spanish bowl adzes, the Bechuana grubbing hoe, banana and cocoa pruners, horseshoes, paring chisels, anchors, eel spears, locomotive firing shovel pans and spades. An introduction by Richard Filmer gives a historical survey of the firm and goes into considerable descriptive detail about items shown in the catalogue.
