European colonists came to North America in the early 1600s. Most colonists came from towns and cities in Europe, so they were not prepared for the harsh wilderness. Most colonists believed that men were stronger and smarter than women. They had definite ideas about the roles, jobs, and behaviors that were suitable for women. The biggest events in most women's lives were marriage and childbirth. Their traditional jobs were preparing food, cleaning, caring for children and treating illnesses.
